MELT

The largest of four installations,"MELT" is concerned with the rapid melting of the Earth's polar ice caps and the destablization of the balance of nature as a consequence of burning fossil fuels. The work is grounded by a large illuminated backdrop that depicts long plastic tubes created from two liter pop bottles. Solid ice inside the backdrop tubes is coupled with spirals of light. Referencing Fibonacci's sequence and the concept that nature is based on a spiral, these frozen tubes displaying complete light spirals represent nature in a state of balance or equilibrium. In front of the illuminated backdrop and protruding into the gallery space are twenty-five plastic tubes, each filled with melted ice and light spirals. The further the tubes are from the balanced state depicted in the backdrop, the more the light spirals collapse. Generic five gallon buckets collect the drips created by the melted ice within the tubes. The buckets are placed as if they were set under a hole in a leaky roof. Yes, the drips are contained but the real problem is not being addressed. A constant, steady dripping sound is heard which reminds the viewer of the physical reality of melting ice and also of time slipping by. A row of rose quartz is tied to the backdrop. In the metaphysical world, quartz is a powerful healing stone with rose quartz connected to the notion of unconditional love. The quartz stones point to the healing that must take place within us to help change the world for the better. The viewer is allowed to walk through the piece to encourage more of a connection to the bigger picture.
