VANISHING POINT

The incredible pressure that humans place upon wild creatures through the destruction of natural habitats is the basis for the installation "VANISHING  POINT". In this work, over 100 plastic water bottles have been cut, stretched and re-assembled into the shpaes of 10 tree branches. Wound inside each branch is an LED light string. The effect is crystalline and pretty but in reality, the plastic branches are unstable and shaky. Set precariously on the weak tips of the glowing plastic branches are natural birds' nests. The birds' intricate weaving of natural materials against the illuminated plastic creates a stark contrast about what is authentic and valuable against that which is damaging and unsustainable. Suspended a few inches above each nest is a plastic egg. These are the "golden eggs" coveted by our society. Each egg is completely encrusted with the objects of our materialistic desires and include decorative bits that have been gleaned from such items as cell phones, electronic devices and jewelry to name a few. The eggs are very flashy and enticing but ultimately sterile and un-nurturing and will never reach the protective surrounds of the nests.
