Constructed from over forty feet of sky blue cotton fabric, "CRITICAL CHANGE" talks about the toxic oil and chemical spills that we regularly hear about on the news and of the devastating tipping point we have created on our planet by our mishandling of oil, gas and petrochemicals. The work is hung banner-like in front of a window. Dipping half of the natural cotton in black dye and leaving the other half sky blue creates the setting for the words CRITICAL CHANGE to glow laser like through the fabric by way of the sun's rays and shine into the gallery space. These illuminated words touch each and every person that walks by the piece. The word CHANGE is dissected by a dividing line created by the original blue cotton and of the black dye. The fabric eventually pools onto the floor and culminates in sticky tar. Placed in the sticky tar are broken nests, bones and eggs. Real leaves and branches are placed at the upper, sky blue end of the cloth to reinforce the idea that natural balance is imperative for sustaining life. CRITICAL CHANGE is happening and CRITICAL CHANGE is needed.
